The Governess of Highland Hall

In “The Governess of Highland Hall” by Carrie Turansky, we meet Julia Foster. Julia and her parents have been missionaries in India, but when Julia’s father becomes ill they decided to move back to England. Julia must find a job to help support her family. She secures a job as governess at Highland Hall taking care of Sir William Ramsey’s two children. She also must teach his two cousins the social graces in order for them to be presented at court. She soon finds the job difficult but vows to persevere. William has the daunting task of saving Highland Hall from financial ruin. He and Julia form a friendship and he comes to rely on her more than he should. That friendship becomes tested because William does not trust anyone because of a painful past. Julia soon finds herself falling in love with the master of Highland Hall but knows that it will never work out. She makes the painful decision to leave in order for William to save the hall. Will William choose love or money?

This is a well written book that will transport you to 1911 England. You can just imagine what life was like at a place like Highland Hall. This book shows us that if we listen to God and follow his plan then things will work out for the best. We just have to keep our eyes on Him and He will see us through. I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. Click here to visit the author's website.

The Prayer Box

In “The Prayer Box” by Lisa Wingate we meet single mom Tandi Reese. Tandi left Texas in a hurry with her two children and returned to Hatteras Island. Tandi had a rough childhood but she had fond memories of Hatteras Island where she stayed with her grandparents. Tandi moves back in hopes of getting her life back on track. When her landlady Iola Anne Poole dies Tandi worries that she and her children may be living on the streets. Then an unexpected offer comes her way. She gets the job of cleaning Iola’s house. As she cleans the house she discovers many prayer boxes. She starts to read them and as she learns more about Iola she also learns many life lessons that she can apply to herself. Tandi starts to make friends with the locals but then her past comes sweeping in. Her sister comes to visit and it seems that she is going to turn Tandi’s life upside down once again. Will Tandi get her life back on track and give her worries over to God?

This is another great book by Lisa Wingate. She paints a very detailed description of Hatteras Island and makes you think you are there with Tandi. You will be moved by not only Tandi’s story but also Iola’s. Even in the darkest times, Iola’s faith in God never wavered. We all could learn something from Ms. Iola Anne Poole. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Tyndale House Publishers.

Into the Whirlwind

In “Into the Whirlwind” by Elizabeth Camden we meet Mollie Knox. Mollie is the owner of the 57th Illinois Watch Company in Chicago. She learned the trade of watch making from her father before he died and she is proud of the company and reputation her family has built. When attorney Zack Kazmarek offers Mollie a deal of a lifetime she wonders if it is too good to be true. Mollie quickly finds out that she is being deceived by Zack and his client but then a terrible tragedy befalls Chicago. Mollie and Zack get caught up in the Great Chicago Fire and in the aftermath they both have one thing in common and that is to survive. In the midst of the fire Zack catches Mollie off guard and tells her that he loves her. That love soon becomes tested because Mollie knows that Zack’s client is misleading her. When another man enters Mollie’s life Zack realizes he may have lost his chance with the woman of his dreams. Will Zack and Mollie find their way back to each other?

This was a very good book set during a horrible time in Chicago. It paints a very accurate picture of the Great Chicago Fire and the months after. You will see how a determined and Godly woman overcomes everything to put her life back together and move forward with God’s guidance. This book shows us how we can endure many bad things if we trust in God. This book also shows that love and forgiveness can overcome all things. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Bethany House Publishers.
