An Untamed Heart

In “An Untamed Heart” by Lauraine Snelling we are taken back to 1878 Norway before Ingeborg Bjorklund immigrated to America. The story opens up with twenty year old Ingeborg Strand wondering what her future holds and wondering if she will ever marry. When she and her siblings and cousins to go stay in the mountains for the summer they find an injured hiker, Nils, and nurse him back to health. As the summer goes on Ingeborg and Nils grow closer. She knows that she has fallen in love with but she also knows that since he comes from a wealthy family nothing can ever come of it. As they depart at the end of summer he tells her he loves her and will come visit. When a tragic accident takes his life Ingeborg knows that she will never love again. Then she meets Roald Bjorklund. Roald has recently lost his wife and needs a new wife to help take care of his four year old son in America and he has chosen Ingeborg. She must find it in her heart and trust in God that marrying Roald is the right thing to do.

This was an amazing prequel to the Red River of the North series. I have loved the Blessing, North Dakota books that have followed the Bjorklund family and have wondered what life was life in Norway before they came to America. You will be swept away to Norway as you read this book and feel like you are there with Ingeborg. If you are a fan of the Blessing books you will not be disappointed in this one. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Bethany House Publishers.

Burning Sky

In “Burning Sky” by Lori Benton we meet Willa Obenchain. When Willa was fourteen she was abducted from her New York homestead by a band of Mohawk Indians. She was adopted into their tribe and given the name Burning Sky. Now twelve years later she has returned to her father’s homestead. When she gets there she finds a Scotsman named Neil MacGregor. Neil has been hurt and Willa takes him to and nurses him back to health. Willa is disappointed to find her parents are missing and she soon learns that unless she can prove her father’s loyalty to America during the War for Independence she will lose her land. Neil soon starts to develop feelings for Willa but she has hardened her heart to everyone because of all that she has been through and lost. When her Mohawk brother brings two orphaned half-breed children to her she is determined not to love them. Little by little she comes to care for them and for Neil but she will not listen to God and keeps pushing them away. Will Willa be able to love again?

This is a very well written book and you will feel like you are there with Willa as she returns to civilization. This is a heartbreaking but sweet story of a young woman who has lost everything but still has the courage and determination not to let it break her. In this book we see how she must trust in God to see her through. I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. Click here to read Chapter 1.

Fatal Tide

Fatal Tide” by Lis Wiehl and Pete Nelson is the enthralling conclusion to the East Salem Trilogy. In the first book a young high school girl is killed and Dani and Tommy soon learn that something sinister and supernatural is happening in East Salem. With the help of others they begin to piece together the clues that were left behind. They learn that the officials at St. Adrian’s Academy are turning young boys into violent men to do their bidding to bring down the world. In this book they get a new accomplice, Reese. Reese went to St. Adrian’s and he knows how high the stakes really are. With the clock ticking and everything coming to an end, a battle between good and evil ensues. Dani and Tommy know that they cannot fight the evil beings by themselves and they turn to God to help them. Will Dani and Tommy save East Salem and the world from the demonic beings?

This book is another fast paced thriller full of suspense that will keep you wondering what will happen next. This book shows us how Satan works in our world today and how he wants to destroy everything good that God has made. Like Dani and Tommy we are constantly faced with evil in our daily lives but we must rely on God to see us through. You will want to read “Waking Hours” and “Darkness Rising” first so that you can follow the story from the beginning. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Thomas Nelson.

The Miner's Lady

In “The Miner’s Lady” by Tracie Peterson we meet Chantel Panetta. Chantel has just returned home to Minnesota after spending a year in Italy with her grandparents. She learns that while she was gone her younger sister, Isabella, has fallen in love with a Calarco. The Panetta’s and the Calarco’s have been enemies for many years. Isabella asks for Chantel’s help so that she can spend time with her Orlando. In doing this Chantel often runs into Orlando’s very attractive brother Dante. Chantel is determined that see that Orlando and Isabella are together and Dante is equally determined to see them apart, and they are both determined not to fall in love with each other. But after seeing each other again and spending time together, they both know they are fighting a losing battle. Will the decades old feud ruin any chance of the two couples living happily ever after?

This is the third book in the Land of Shining Water series and it is another page turner. You will be swept away to a small mining Minnesota town in 1890 and feel like you are there with Chantel and Dante. In this book we see how bitterness and hatred ruins relationships with those we love but that God’s forgiveness will heal all wounds. This book can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading “The Icecutter’s Daughter” and “The Quarryman’s Bride” as well. In “Stranded” by Dani Pettrey, we are once again taken to the last frontier of Alaska on a new adventure with the McKenna siblings. Darcy St. James is a journalist and has returned to Alaska at the request of a friend and fellow journalist. Her friend has been investigating a big story aboard a cruise ship and finds herself in trouble. Darcy joins the cruise in hopes of helping but soon finds her friend is missing and believes that the crew is covering it up. Gage McKenna also joins the cruise in hopes of expanding his family’s business venture to the tourists on the ship. When Darcy and Gage see each other again they both realize they still have feelings for each other. Gage is soon drawn into the mystery that Darcy is trying to uncover because he knows it is the only way to protect her. The problem is that he knows the more time he spends with her the harder it will be to walk away from her. When Darcy's life becomes endangered he realizes he can no longer fight the feelings. Will he be able to turn his life over to God and move past his grief to have a life with Darcy? Will they uncover the sinister plot aboard the ship?

This is the third book in the Alaskan Courage series and it will keep you turning the pages. It is full of drama, love, and hope. We see how no matter how bad the situation is Darcy always turns to God to guide her. We also see how God’s love can help us move past our grief and move forward with our lives. I highly recommend reading “Submerged” and “Shattered” first so that you will have the complete story of the McKenna siblings and especially the story of Gage and Darcy. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Bethany House Publishers.

My Hope is Found

“My Hope is Found” by Joanne Bischof continues the dramatic story of Lonnie and Gideon. Lonnie is trying to put Gideon out of her and move on with her life. She meets a young preacher, Toby, and though she likes him he is not her Gideon. Lonnie has the constant reminder of her marriage with Gideon each time she looks at their son. She and Toby do become close over time and she has started opening her heart to him, but her world is going to be turned upside down again. Gideon’s wife Cassie has given him her blessing to return to his family. She knows that he does not love her the way he loves Lonnie and she does not want to keep them apart any longer. As Gideon makes his way back to Lonnie he second guesses himself along the way. When he finally returns to their home he sees another man in his place. He soon finds out that he has to earn Lonnie’s trust once again. Before they can have a future he must put his past behind him once and for all. This is the third book in The Cadence of Grace series and it is full of emotion. You will see not only Gideon and Lonnie’s pain but Toby’s as well. They all must turn to God and trust in Him to see them through their difficult time. I highly recommend reading “Be Still My Soul” and “Though My Heart Is Torn” first in order to fully appreciate Lonnie and Gideon’s struggle.
