Death Takes a Ride

“Death Takes a Ride” by Lorena McCourtney takes us to Eugene, Oregon to the life of private investigator Cate Kincaid. As the story opens Cate arrives at H&B Classic Auto Restorations on an errand for her aunt. What Cate did not count on was walking into a robbery and attempted murder scene. It seems like a cut and dry case but things do not add up. One of the owners of H&B hires Cate to investigate the attempt on his partner’s life. Cate’s investigations lead her to many more questions but unfortunately not many answers. The investigation also makes her wonder just who the good guys and the bad guys truly are. Cate also has help on the case from her boyfriend Mitch. Cate and Mitch’s relationship seems to be going great but then Cate learns he may be taking a job out of state. Cate is not happy as she wants a future with Mitch but she puts her faith in God to help her solve the case and prays for a future with Mitch.

This book will keep you reading and guessing until the end. It is a mystery with a little comedy and quirky characters you will love. This book also reminds us that God is always in control and that when we trust in Him things will turn out for the best even if we do not think it is the best at the time. This is the third book in the Cate Kincaid Files series and I highly recommend reading “Dying to Read” and “Dolled Up to Die” to have all of Cate and Mitch’s story. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Revell.

Captured by Love

“Captured by Love” by Jody Hedlund takes us to 1814 on the Michilimackinac Island in the Michigan Territory during the War of 1812. The British Army is in control of the island and the loyalties of many Americans are divided. Angelique MacKenzie lives a grueling life as she awaits her fiancĂ©’s return. What she never counted on was for her true love and her fiancĂ©’s brother to return to the island. Her love for Pierre Durant has not wavered but he only sees her as his childhood friend. After many months of spending time with her he finally faces his feelings for Angelique when he sees firsthand the cruel treatment she faces daily from her stepfather. All hope seems to be lost for the both of them when Pierre is caught as a spy. Which path will Angelique choose when it comes down to her love for Pierre and honoring her promise to Jean?

This is an amazing book full of details of life on what is now Mackinac Island during the War of 1812. You will feel like you have stepped back in a time of war and poverty as the islanders do everything they can to survive. This is a book of hope and faith as we see how Angelique and Pierre are torn between love and honor but how they turn to God during their time of need. This is the third book in the Michigan Brides collection but it is a standalone story. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Bethany House Publishers.
