“Captured by Love” by Jody Hedlund takes us to 1814 on the Michilimackinac Island in the Michigan Territory during the War of 1812. The British Army is in control of the island and the loyalties of many Americans are divided. Angelique MacKenzie lives a grueling life as she awaits her fiancé’s return. What she never counted on was for her true love and her fiancé’s brother to return to the island. Her love for Pierre Durant has not wavered but he only sees her as his childhood friend. After many months of spending time with her he finally faces his feelings for Angelique when he sees firsthand the cruel treatment she faces daily from her stepfather. All hope seems to be lost for the both of them when Pierre is caught as a spy. Which path will Angelique choose when it comes down to her love for Pierre and honoring her promise to Jean?
This is an amazing book full of details of life on what is now Mackinac Island during the War of 1812. You will feel like you have stepped back in a time of war and poverty as the islanders do everything they can to survive. This is a book of hope and faith as we see how Angelique and Pierre are torn between love and honor but how they turn to God during their time of need. This is the third book in the Michigan Brides collection but it is a standalone story. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Bethany House Publishers.
