Shannon and her father leave Virginia during the Civil War and head for Grand Coeur, Idaho. Shannon’s father is a preacher and he has been called to a new church in Grand Coeur. When they reach Idaho, Shannon is not impressed especially when she meets stagecoach driver, Matthew Dubois. Matthew works for Wells Fargo and has taken an office job in Grand Coeur in order to be with his sister and nephew, Alice and Todd. Matthew soon realizes his sister is sick and does not have long to live. Since Shannon wants something to do to keep her busy she offers to take care of Alice and look after Todd while Matthew works. Alice decides that Matthew will need a wife to help him raise Todd when she is gone and she is determined that Shannon is the right woman. Soon Shannon and Matthew realize they were wrong about each other and begin to like each other and eventually their feelings deepen. After Shannon hears that Matthew only wants to marry her in order to gain a mother for Todd, she calls off the wedding. Will Matthew be able to win Shannon back or will it be too late?

This book was a quick and easy read. At times it was sad because we know that Alice will not live long but that is what made it so good. Life is not always fun and humorous and this book is an example of what people face in real life and how important God is during those tough times. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Thomas Nelson.

Pershing: Commander of the Great War

“Pershing: Commander of the Great War” by John Perry is one of six books in The Generals series and is about the great American military leader, John Joseph Pershing. Pershing’s earliest memories were of war. The Civil War was raging on while he was a small boy growing up in Laclede, Missouri. After the war ended, the Pershing family became one of the richest families in the county. Pershing lost his interest in becoming a soldier and decided to become a lawyer. The family luck and fortune ran out so Pershing had to teach school in order to save money to attend law school. Pershing decided to apply to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York because his tuition would be free. West Point helped form Pershing into the man he became. He followed all the rules and was all business. He expected the best out of his underclassmen and later the soldiers serving under him. After he graduated from West Point, Pershing was sent to Fort Bayard in New Mexico. In chapter 2 we learn about his time spent in New Mexico and his role in the Wounded Knee Massacre in South Dakota. After Wounded Knee, Pershing was assigned to the University of Nebraska as a professor of military science. Chapter 3 tells of Pershing’s assignment in Cuba alongside Theodore Roosevelt. In chapter 4 we learn how Pershing wins over the Moros while stationed in the Philippines. Chapters 5, 6 and 7, tell of how Pershing meets his soul mate, Frankie, and their life in the Philippines and finally the tragic event of Pershing losing his wife and three of his four children. Chapter 8 tells of the Mexican Expedition in which during this time, George S. Patton served as one of Pershing's aides. After the Mexican Expedition, war breaks out and Pershing is sent to Europe. Chapters 9 through 12 tell of World War I and Pershing’s great role in winning the war. In 1919, in recognition of his distinguished service during World War I, the U.S. Congress authorized the President to promote Pershing to General of the Armies of the United States, the highest rank possible for any member of the United States armed forces. On July 15, 1948, John Pershing died in his sleep. He was buried with him men at Arlington Cemetery. Bailee, Geena and Piper Cooper have had a secret they have kept since childhood. They saw their father murder their mother. When their father wants them to all get together at the house where their mother died, the secrets start to come out. The sisters decide it is time for the truth and to confront their father. What they do not plan on is for their father to announce his new marriage and faith in God. When they finally accuse their father, they find out that what they have believed all these years is far from the truth. During this time Bailee starts having dreams about her childhood and in turn remembers certain events that she has long forgotten. In a moment of panic she calls her friend Mark to come be with her. What she did not count on is her feelings for Mark to grow into love. None of the girls want to have anything to do with God because when they needed him most they feel that he was not there. As the secrets start to come out, Bailee feels betrayed by both her father and God. With Mark’s help she finally realizes she does need God in her life and turns to him. Will the Cooper family be able to finally put the past behind them?

As someone who had several tragedies in my young life I could definitely put myself in Bailee’s shoes. When something happens to rock our perfect world, we wonder why God allowed it and sometimes we turn away from him. What we all need to realize is that He never left us. This book helped me remember that no matter how bad life can get He will always be there with us. I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels that God has not been there for them at some point in their life. Susannah lived in Virginia during the Civil War and was rumored to be a spy for the North. Since the years of her death all the women in her family have had bad things happen to them. Some people believe the house is haunted and the ghost of Susannah is to blame for their problems. When Marielle Bishop marries into the family, she sets out to discover what is really going on at Holly Oak. Susannah’s great-granddaughter, Adelaide, still lives in the house and while she does not believe the house is haunted she does believe the house is stuck and cannot move past what Susannah did. With the help of Adelaide’s daughter, Caroline, Marielle discovers the rumors about Susannah are not true and she realizes Susannah does not have a reason to haunt Holly Oak or cause harm to the people living there. Will they be able to convince Adelaide and the people of the town?

This was my first book to read by Susan Meissner and I loved it. She does a good job of connecting the present to the past. She brings the characters to life and makes you feel like you are one of them. This book also shows how easy it is for people to believe something they hear instead of wanting to find out the truth. This was a very good and fast book to read. When Georgie’s train is robbed by the Comer Gang, she meets the leader Frank Comer and Texas Ranger Lucious Landrum. Lucious has been after the Comer gang for quite some time and he almost had them this time. Georgie finds Frank to be nicer than she thought an outlaw would be and Lucious to be show off. Lucious’ new assignment is to go undercover as Luke Palmer disguised as a telephone salesman and repairman in Georgie’s town. Georgie and Luke do not see eye to eye at first and they definitely do not want to work together but they soon find themselves attracted to each other. While Luke is busy repairing phone lines and searching for clues about the Comer gang, Georgie has started up the Brenham Ladies’ Plumage League. The ladies are protesting the use of real bird parts for decorations on ladies hats. When Georgie’s passion for saving the birds brings danger to her, Luke is there to protect her. During this episode they realize how much they love each other and Georgie finds out that Luke is really Lucious. Luke finally figures out who is in the gang and tries to apprehend them but nobody in the town will help so Georgie has to. When Luke meets Frank Comer he realizes the outlaw is someone that was very close to him and thought he would never see again.

“Love on the Line” is a very sweet and fun read. Deeanne Gist never misses with her books and this is another favorite. It is not hard to figure out what is going to happen but it is still a great read. In the first two chapters, we learn about Sherman’s childhood and his years at West Point. When Sherman was a small child he lost his father and was sent to live with a foster family, but he never really felt included in the family and always felt beholden to them. When he went to West Point, he finally felt like he was home. These years made Sherman the man he was. He wanted fame and to remembered as a great person. He did not want to be indebted to anybody, especially his in-laws. In chapters three through seven, we learn about his life up until the Civil War. Sherman wanted to be a military man, but he wanted to be in the action and he needed financial security for his family so he resigned from the military. He moved a lot in hopes of finding a suitable and lasting job, but he never did. Finally he found a job in Louisiana as the superintendent at the Louisiana Military Academy. He loved the position and he loved the south; Sherman was known for being proslavery. But when the Civil War broke out he knew he had to leave and return to the North. Chapters eight through twelve are about his strategies and battles in the war. We see how Sherman’s motivation for fame played a part in his strategies. We also learn some of the events that drove him to a nervous breakdown. Then we have his return to the battlefield at the Battle of Shiloh. We finish with Sherman’s famous, or infamous depending on where you are from, March to the Sea and finally the end of the war.

We all learn about the Civil War and the great generals in school. But we never learn about how they grew up to be the great leaders they were unless we read books like this. In this book, you will see how Sherman’s childhood played a role in the man he becomes. You will learn why he did certain things in the war that most of us never understood. And you will also learn how personal tragedies and disappointments throughout his life shaped him. I highly recommend this book if you are a Civil War buff. It is set on the fictional island of Bridal Veil off of the coast of Georgia. Audrey Cunningham and her father, Boyd, moved back to Bridal Veil from Pittsburgh in order for Boyd to remain sober and regain his health. The problem that they face when they return to his family home is the taxes. So that the Cunningham’s can keep their home and be able to pay the back taxes, they open up their home and surrounding buildings to boarders who are on the island building a grand resort. The contractor for the building of the resort is Marshall Graham. Audrey does not trust him because his father was a notorious drunk and she fears he is to and that he will cause her father to slip back into his old habits. Everything starts to change when Boyd knows he will not be there much longer to look after Audrey, and he asks Marshall to do it after he is gone and to also make sure she does not turn away from God during this time. Audrey and Marshall become friends during her father’s illness and soon their feelings for each other deepen. Also during this time, there seems to be something underhanded going on at the construction site. Somebody is trying to sabotage the building of the resort. As Audrey and Marshall try to figure out who is doing the damage, they also have to deal with the ups and downs of their new relationship. Will they live happily ever after? Will their faith in God stay strong?

This is a great first book in the new Bridal Veil Island series. There are so many great characters besides the main ones, especially Aunt Thora. You can’t go wrong with a Tracie Peterson or Judith Miller book. Dani is brought in on a case involving the death of a local high school girl, Julie. The awful way that she died leaves the town in an uproar. Dani has help with the case from her former classmate Tommy Gunderson. Tommy was a NFL player and after a tragic accident he quit playing and moved back to his hometown with the goal of becoming a private investigator. Dani and Tommy question several of Julie’s classmates and discover that they were all involved in a passage party. The problem is none of them can remember what happened the night Julie died. Dani and Tommy know one of these kids knows the whole story behind her death and may have even been the one to kill her.

“Waking Hours” is the first book in the East Salem Trilogy. This is a very fast paced book full of suspense. This story has many twists and plots that will keep you guessing, and when you think you have everything figured out it will leave you with a cliffhanger. Lis Wiehl quickly became one of my favorite authors with her Triple Threat novels and she does not let her readers down with her new book. Mary Lynn and Jackson Scoville moved to Charleston, South Carolina so that they could provide a better life for their daughters, Catherine, Lilla and Casey. Mary Lynn has done everything she can to be accepted by Charleston society so that her girls will have more opportunities open for them. Jackson is constantly reminding their daughters what is important in life and he always pushes them to do better in school and other activities he thinks are appropriate. Mary Lynn starts to realize there is more to life than just being accepted by society. When she starts to go to church and read the Bible she tries to get her husband to join her but Jackson does not believe in God. Jackson feels like God left him a long time ago. Mary Lynn starts praying for Jackson and asks her friends at church to do the same. Jackson has a life altering experience and realizes he has been wrong all these years. Jackson goes from one extreme to the other and becomes so wrapped up in spreading the Gospel that he forgets about his family. Word spreads around Charleston about Jackson and his family has to pay the price. Mary Lynn is no longer accepted in the social circles and the girls get picked on at school. Jenkins is the second book about the Chicago Police Department Precinct 11. In the first book, “The Brotherhood”, we met Detective Boone Drake. Boone helped pull off a massive sting and brought down the heads of the biggest street gangs in Chicago. While moving their key witness, Boone was shot. Now in “The Betrayal” Boone learns there is a rat within the Chicago Police Department. When his girlfriend Haeley is arrested, Boone starts investigating to see who is framing her and who is really behind the leak. As Boone and Jack Keller, his boss and good friend, start getting closer to the truth, Boone’s life becomes in great danger. Not only does he have the real conspirator after him but also the gang members that are still on the streets. They are also after Pascual Candelario, the key witness. Boone and Keller know Candelario and his family are at risk because the conspirator knows where they are being kept. Will Boone be able to keep Candelario safe and keep Haeley out of prison?

“The Betrayal” is an amazing follow up to “The Brotherhood”. We not only have the suspense of who actually did it and why they are framing Haeley, but we also see that no matter how bad it gets for Boone and Haeley they rely on God to see them through. I highly recommend both of these books and can’t wait for the next one. Ira was born into a large Amish family. His family was part of the Old Order Amish in Iowa. In this book, Ira tells about the day to day life he lived; from his childhood on the farm and going to school to his teenage running around years and finally to his decision to leave the church. When Ira was a young boy, several of his siblings left the Amish community to find out what else was in the world. Finally it was Ira’s turn to see what was beyond the Amish community. He tells us how hard it was for him to leave and his struggles to survive without his friends and family. He returned to the community several times and tried to join the church, but ultimately realized he had different feelings and beliefs than his family.

This was a very well told story from someone who really grew up with Amish. There were funny parts in the book as well as sad. This is a coming of age story unlike most people experience. This is a great book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is trying to figure out what they should do with their life. This book continues the story of Georgia lawyer, Tami Taylor. Tami comes from a very strict Christian family and is now faced with the realities of the world. Tami joins a law firm in Savannah and has to defend a young girl named Jessie. Jessie has run away from home and has many secrets she is hiding from Tami. Tami and her landlady take her in and show kindness she has never had before. When Jessie is kidnapped, Tami thinks she has run away again and she is worried for her safety. Tami also has her own problems to worry about. Her landlady has a form of dementia and her health has declined. Tami also must figure out who she wants to spend the rest of her life with, Zach or Vince.

This book shows us what many lawyers have to go through everyday at their jobs, and the hard decisions they must make in their cases so that they do not compromise their Christian principles. “Greater Love” could be read as a stand alone novel, but I would recommend reading the first two books in the series, “Deeper Water” and “Higher Hope”, so you could read Tami’s story from the beginning. Sixteen women start out on the journey but they soon discover that they have been deceived. Instead of land waiting for them, the women have been brought out to Nebraska for the men in a new town. When the women reach Plum Grove, Ella and her mother Zita, Ruth and her son Jackson, Sally, Hettie and Caroline decide to stay and find land to homestead together. Zita is the mother figure for all the women and trusts that God will provide for their needs. Ella soon finds a new friend in her neighbor Jeb but finds it hard to trust him because her first husband has destroyed her confidence. Ruth starts to develop feelings for local rancher Lucas after she helps take care of him when he breaks his leg. Sally has a crush on Lucas’ foreman, Pete. Hettie is running from her past and has several secrets she is keeping from her new friends. Caroline falls in love with widower Matthew and is daughter Linney, but Matthew has never dealt with his wife’s death and the falling out with his cousin Lucas. The women stand by each other and help each other face the difficulties in life and love, and they soon become the family that they were each looking for. Jim Fate dies tragically from a poisonous gas that fills his recording booth while his show, “The Hand of Fate” is on air and everyone in downtown Portland panics and tries to evacuate. Luckily no one else is harmed during the event. In the days following Fate’s murder, the Triple Threat Club, FBI Special Agent Nicole Hedges, crime reporter Cassidy Shaw and federal prosecutor Allison Pierce, tries to figure out who would want to kill Jim Fate. The better question may be who wouldn’t want to kill him. Fate has made many enemies over the years, from a family that lost a daughter to a politician who was once one of his closest friends. “Hand of Fate” also continues the storylines of Nicole, Allison, and Cassidy. We learn more about Nicole’s past, Allison’s fears throughout her pregnancy and impending motherhood, and Cassidy’s insecurities of being a news reporter.

“Hand of Fate” is the second book about the Triple Threat Club. We were first introduced to the women in “Face of Betrayal”. Lis Wiehl is becoming one of my favorite authors. Her books are well researched and written. I could not put “Hand of Fate” down until I knew who the killer was. Wiehl brings her characters to life and makes then seem real to the reader not only in their jobs but also in what is going on in each of their personal lives. I would definitely recommend “Hand of Fate” to those who love a good mystery. They decide to take a adventurous trip and go on a cruise. When the women reach Perdida, they learn that their ship has already sailed and their only choice is to turn around and become part of the evacuation. Kai Miller, an employee of the cruise ship, misses the boat and must also evacuate. Kai and the three ladies meet up during the evacuation and must travel together to find shelter. The trip is full of humor, adventure and peril as the ladies try to make their way to Daily, Texas. Once they finally get home, Kai meets Donetta's nephew, Kemp. When she decides she wants out, she reports him to the police and strikes out on her own. Assuming a new identity, Bridie lives a quiet life until she meets a teenaged girl begging God for help. Alasdair MacPherson, the girl's father, is a widowed pastor struggling to raise three children after his wife's suicide. He hires Bridie to take care of his children while he is working and Bridie is finally happy and realizes God has always been there for her. But Bridie's happiness is threatened when the man she sent to jail is released and tracks her down. We see how these sisters love each other no matter what happens and their loyalty to each other, their mother and younger sister. It appears to be a hate crime but as she continues to investigate, things become more puzzling and complicated. Raleigh is also helping with a gang related case. When the two cases start to intertwine, she starts wondering who the bad guys and the victims really are. Raleigh also has a hard time with her supervisor who is not certain she learned anything from being sent to Seattle. Her mother is also behaving in an unusual manner and Raleigh has to keep her job in the FBI a secret from her. Raleigh’s former boyfriend, DeMott Fielding, is also trying to win her heart.

“The Clouds Roll Away” is the third book about Raleigh Harmon. The book was well written and researched and I enjoyed reading it, but it was predictable. I would recommend reading the first two books, “The Stones Cry Out” and “The Rivers Run Dry” first if you want the background on Raleigh and what happened to get her transferred to Seattle. But this book could also be read as a stand alone novel.

The Hidden Flame

“The Hidden Flame” by Janette Oke and Davis Bunn is the second book in the Acts of Faith series. Abigail lost her family when she was a young girl but she discovers her brother Jacob is alive. Abigail and Jacob become followers of the Messiah, and Abigail finds a new purpose in life while Jacob is confused on what path he should follow. Two men want Abigail's hand in marriage. One, Ezra, is a successful merchant and widower looking for a mother for his children. The other, Linux, is a Roman soldier who is captivated by her beauty and charm. But she does not love either man. Stephen, one of the leaders of The Way, has a character and faith that she admires. Abigail’s faith is put to the test when the one she loves is in grave danger.

This series is about the birth of Christianity in the first century. “The Hidden Flame” picked up where “The Centurion’s Wife” left off. Oke and Bunn continued the story of Leah and Alban from the first book while telling us the story of Abigail and Jacob. This book shows us that we need to trust and rely on God at all times. He knows what is best for His children even if we don’t understand at the time. She wants to find her family so he hires her to work as a governess to her nephew, Edward North. She turns to Lieutenant John North for help finding out what really happened to her mother years ago. As Addie and John get closer to the truth, danger threatens them and their happiness, but Addies knows that God will see them through and help them find the truth they are seeking.

This was my first book to read by Colleen Coble and I really enjoyed the story. This book tells the story of how the six men from Diamond Rio became interested in music and the struggles they each faced before making it big in Nashville. It also describes how they came together as a band and became a very successful group in country music. Their story is one of determination and commitment and shows the respect the guys have for each other. I grew up listening to country music and Diamond Rio has always been one of my favorite groups. I never knew the ups and downs they had over the years until I read the book. If you are a fan of country music you will like this book.
